What an Egg Taught Me About Gaining Clients

Behold, a sower went forth to sow seeds.
Some fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold.
A business speaking event 2 years ago critically changed how I do business. But probably not in the way you’re thinking.
You know I’m an introvert, right?
Attending events where I know almost no one is not my idea of “fun” or “relaxing.” (In fact, it’s kind of my worst nightmare.)
I was invited to speak at this event. And up on the stage, I felt like I was in my element. Cool. Calm. Confident (maybe a little sweaty…)
But when it was time for “free chit chat time,” my blood pressure went through the roof.
Even at this event where I was a featured speaker, when it was time to "mingle," I literally felt like I had climbed back inside of my extremely self conscious, insecure high school head and body.
I messaged my coach on Voxer like, “I just nailed my presentation, but now it’s time to walk up and talk to people and my entire soul wants to shrivel up and blow away.”
She gave me a piece of advice that changed everything.
“What if you don’t go up to anyone. What if instead, you sit down. And leave a chair open on both sides of you. And wait.”
I immediately took her advice and sat down in a quiet corner with space for someone to sit on either side of me. I instantly felt my nervous system sit down too.
Within a few minutes, a woman came and sat in the chair next to me and said, “Can I ask you a question about your presentation?” 0 small talk required.
I still use this same technique all the time. At church events. At family events.
But there’s something we can all learn about business from this.

Not eggs from the store. The ones inside of you.
I learned this from Kate Northrup’s book, Do Less.
Listen to how crazy this is.
Once per month, an egg is released from the ovary.
And what does she do? She sits. Right where she is. She stays in place. She makes herself available for fertilization for about 12-24 hours.
She doesn’t run up and down the fallopian tube, looking for the sperm, chasing it down.
She lets it come to her.
The egg and surrounding cells release substances that help guide sperm (a bit like a trail they follow).
A few hundred sperm make it far enough to approach the egg, but only the sperm that have reached a fertilization-ready state are able to get in.
To me, that feels like a wise sermon about how to do business.
Here are some old (and new) business rules I have for myself
No “chasing clients”
I let them come to me. If there’s any opportunity to serve someone, I increase my generosity 10x. Instead of always wondering if clients are coming, I trust that they always are.
More focus on the clients who are already ready
Someone can watch everything you post and still not buy. And someone else can find you on a Tuesday and pay by Friday. The difference is whether or not they’re ready. So when you create content, talk to the ones who are ready today instead of the ones who are skeptical.
More “efforting” is not the way to attract more clients
Instead, I’ll be prioritizing telling client success stories and making invitations to one specific offer to remind the ones who are ready to make a choice. I’m not going to be “posting just to post”
This is something I really struggle with as a healing high achieving perfectionist
and eldest daughter who at some point picked up the belief that everything depends on me and that the universe will come apart at the seams if I'm not giving it my "all," 100% of the time.
I'm learning to sit down.
To sit back. Lean back.
To let. Allow. Receive.
It’s about trusting what you did weeks or months ago to still be working together for your good.
To let “this is complete for today” be something I decide, not something I earn.
To detach being in motion from being a sign that I'm "doing enough"
To tolerate the discomfort that shows up when I say "no" to doing more.
To notice when I'm trying to prevent future problems by overworking in the present.
To allow myself to leave something B- quality even when I know how to make it A+
Really, it's about faith. Trust.
Faith that good things are always on their way to me.
Trust that there are perfect match clients in my audience *right now.*
Faith that they’re already thinking about working with me, even if they haven’t said a word yet.
Trust that the more good I put into the world, it will come back to me “an hundred-fold."
